Winter: the ice and snow season
Winter is Harbin’s most iconic season, with concentrated ice-and-snow scenery and the strongest atmosphere — but temperatures are low, so dress warmly. To make the most of the ice and snow, winter is the fitting choice.
Summer: a cool escape
- Summer is cool and pleasant — good for exploring the city, architecture and riverside views.
- Some ice-and-snow attractions do not open in summer; check the season’s highlights before you go.
Spring and autumn: comfortable transitions
- Temperatures are moderate and crowds smaller — good for city walks and slow travel.
- Day-night temperature swings are large; layer up or down, with wind in spring and rain possible in autumn.
How to choose
- For ice structures and light shows, choose winter; to avoid the severe cold and travel comfortably, choose summer or autumn.
- Public holidays and event periods bring large crowds — going off-peak makes for a more relaxed visit.
Note
Whatever the season, check the local weather and opening notices before you travel, and prepare clothing and plans for the actual forecast.
