Golden hours
From the "blue hour" just after sunset through full lights-on, the ice structures and lanterns are at their most saturated; a trace of daylight remains for richer warm–cool contrast.
Composition
- Use the symmetry and axis of ice buildings and colonnades for depth and order.
- Make a snow sculpture the subject and find side light to reveal its texture.
- Shoot giant ice structures from a low, upward angle to emphasize their scale.
Gear tips
- For night scenes, bring a tripod and use a slower shutter speed.
- Cold drains batteries — keep spares warm and carry several.
- Bag your gear before going indoors to avoid condensation.
