Neighbourhood features
Laodaowai preserves a group of "Chinese Baroque" buildings — Chinese courtyards fused with Western facades — a microcosm of Harbin's early commercial district. Today it gathers long-standing shops, snacks and craft stores — good for eating while strolling.
What to do
- Walk slowly and look at the carved details and facades of the old buildings.
- Try local flavours at a long-standing shop — buns, smoked meats, pastries and more.
- Mostly on foot; half a day is relaxed, and it links to the downtown night scene in the evening.
Tips
It is not far from Central Street, so combine the two; winter roads may be icy — watch your step. Respect residents and businesses when visiting the old buildings.
