The night-time challenge

Lit ice structures are richly coloured, but the light is weak with strong contrast — handheld shots blur easily, and images come out dark or noisy. The fix is "steady + control light + pick your moment".

Steady first

  • Prefer a tripod or a fixed support; without one, tuck your elbows in, brace, and squeeze the shutter.
  • Turn on stabilisation and use a timer or voice shutter to cut the shake of pressing the button.

Exposure and colour

  • Meter on a mid-bright area to avoid blowing out large patches of light; adjust manually if needed.
  • Raise ISO to rescue a shot but not too high, or noise shows; better to use a slow shutter with support.
  • Mind white balance under coloured light — a cooler tone can feel more "icy".

When to shoot

  • Just after dusk, while the sky still holds some blue, gives the best warm-cold contrast — the golden hour for night shots.
  • Grab your spot before the crowds; when lights first come on it is quieter with better atmosphere.

Note

Batteries drain fast in the cold — carry spares and keep them warm; seal gear before moving indoors or out to reduce lens fogging; stay warm and watch your footing at night.

FAQ

Can I bring a drone or professional camera gear?
For drones and large camera gear, follow the park’s on-site rules; to protect public safety and others’ experience, learn and follow the requirements before use.
How do I get to Ice and Snow World?
Ice and Snow World lies on the north bank of the Songhua River; reach it by metro, bus or taxi across the river. If driving, navigate to the park; parking is available nearby. See the transport guide under "Guides" for details.
What is the difference between the night and day sessions?
The day session enters during the day, best for ice architecture and snow-sculpture detail and the ice-and-snow fun; the night session enters after dusk for the light show and night photography. For both day and night, choose the full-day pass.
When does Ice and Snow World generally open?
Ice and Snow World is a seasonal winter park, usually opening around late December and running to about the end of February the following year. Exact opening/closing dates and daily hours vary with weather and each year’s arrangements — before travelling, check the booking page and on-site notices.
