A common problem with snow shots is that the snow turns out grey or blown out. Add a little exposure compensation to make the snow whiter, and give the subject a darker backdrop for clearer layering.
Ice and ice structures reflect strongly; side and back light bring out texture and outline. Lit ice structures at night are colourful — hold steady or use support.
Tips: cameras and phones drain fast in the cold — carry spares and keep them warm in an inner pocket; seal gear before going indoors to reduce lens fogging; stay in safe areas and do not step onto unopened ice for a shot.
